Ah yes! The good old coffee plunger. It almost feels like the coffee world was in caveman times before this lovely invention came along. Few methods of brewing are as popular, world wide, as the french press is.
Even people who (unfortunately) know nothing about coffee culture have heard of the french press and all of its accolades. Let’s explore why it had made such a splash.
The Beauty of Using a French Press
Let’s start with the obvious just to get that out of the way:
The french press is gorgeous. There is nothing in the world so beautiful as a finely crafted, glass french press.
Okay. Maybe ‘the most beautiful thing in existence’ is a bit too much, but there’s no doubt that it can be a truly elegant piece of equipment in your coffee making ensemble.
Much more important, though, is its general capacity to produce a much fuller bodied batch of espresso than many a drip machine would.
Unique Flavours
One of the great things about a french press is that it can be used without one of those paper filters.
Why is that important besides having one less thing to throw away?
That’s because during the filtration/extraction portion of the brewing process, the majority of filters pull the oils out of the coffee.
Fat equals flavour. Each bit of oil pulled out of the final cup is another step away from the most flavorful cup of coffee you can have.
There’s even more. The nature of the french press guarantees complete saturation of the grinds.
That is, with a drip machine, water doesn’t always reach every particle of coffee bean, leaving some flavor and substance on the table. With the french press, because the grinds are steeped, every bit is taken advantage of.
Did we mention the temperature? With machines, the water is usually rapidly heated and rapidly cooled. The correct water temperature only happens at one point in between.
With coffee plungers, the temperature is consistent and the coffee is always ‘cooked’ at the perfect temperature to produce the ideal cup.
