The number one factor separating good coffee from outstanding coffee is the quality of the grind. Poorly ground coffee will fail to make a beautiful brew, each and every time. They say that a poor craftsman blames his tools, but here the blame really does lie with the poor tools.

For those who do not need to produce large quantities of ground coffee in short spaces of time, manual grinders can be a better solution than their automatic counterparts. Manual grinders put full control over the grinding process firmly in your hands. If you want to obtain the maximum flavour from your coffee, as well as having the flexibility of controlling the grind, a manual grinder may be the perfect solution for you.

Manual Coffee Grinders

Remember that it is hugely important to find a manual grinder that affords you a precise and consistent grind quality as manual grinders can vary significantly incost and efficiency.

Benefits Of Manual Grinders

Whilst the majority of busy cafes will understandably opt for an automatic coffee grinder due to its higher outputs and ease of use, there are many benefits to a manual grinder over an automatic.

Firstly – and perhaps most importantly – manual grinders give you full control over the grinding process, consequently giving you more control over the taste of your coffee brew.

Manual grinders are much smaller than automatic grinders and do not require a power source, making them ultra-portable and perfect to travel with.

Not only are manual grinders more affordable for the home coffee connoisseur, many of them are also aesthetically beautiful objects.

At Barista Warehouse, we get a genuine sense of satisfaction from grinding our own coffee by hand.

FAQ

The best manual coffee grinder:
  • Should be robustly built to handle the stress of use.
  • Have a wide range of grind settings.
  • Allow you to grind quickly without too much effort.
  • Be compact enough to be packed away easily for travel.
How long manual coffee grinders take depends on the user, but generally it would require no more than a minute to grind for 2 or 3 cups. It does take a bit of effort to manually grind coffee, but it’s not difficult, and manual coffee grinders are great if you want fresh coffee on your travels. Learn more with our guide to Manual and Automatic Coffee Grinders.
Manual coffee grinders are better than electric grinders for those who like to feel hands on with their coffee, or for travellers or campers who want the freshest coffee when they are away from home. Most manual coffee grinders can produce grounds that rival automatic grinders. Our guide to Automatic vs Manual Grinders will help.
Manual coffee grinders do wear out eventually as they are mechanical, and must stand up to the strains of repeated turning and twisting. A good manual coffee grinder will last for over 500 pounds of coffee, which should see you through for quite some time (depending on your intake)!
How long a manual coffee grinder lasts depends on the materials used and the quality of build. A well made manual coffee grinder with burrs should last between 5-7 years, with ceramic burrs being more hardwearing than their flat steel counterparts. Manual coffee grinders can be damaged in travel, however. Our Grinder Cleaning Guide could help extend the life of your grinder.
The difference between a burr grinder and a blade grinder is the mechanism used to grind the beans. Burrs crush the beans to creat evenly ground coffee, whereas blades are less consistent as they using whirring blades which smash the beans.
