Scales & Timers
More information about Scales & Timers
The search for the perfect cup of coffee continues!
Fortunately, you have come to the right place. There are few things as important to manually making a proper cup of coffee than the use of a scale and a timer (and what is just as or more important will be listed in the relevant categories page).
Does this sound like too much hype for a pair of items so simple?
If so, you definitely need to read on.
Why Use Coffee Scales and Timers
Coffee is just like anything else you create in the kitchen and your brew bar.
Every cup is a recipe. Scales and timers are instruments of measurement.
The benefit of using them is being able to follow a recipe correctly, and then being able to do so continuously into the future.
Let’s start with the scale.
There are some excellent questions to ask yourself when you’re measuring out your grinds by volume. I.E. by ‘coffee scoop’
What’s the difference between a scoop of ground coffee and a scoop of coffee beans? How about the density of your scoop? Can you be sure that it’s packed as tightly today as it was yesterday, or that it’s not looser in there? Is the scoop you picked up level or is it an uneven heap, and what does that mean about the next time you want to make a cup?
Using weight as your guideline is much more exact than using volume. It takes out all of the guesswork. This is extremely important if you’re going to make your own brews by hand.
With the timers, you have to recognize that there are different stages to brewing coffee. Essentially, as you’re pouring your hot water, what you’re doing is ‘cooking up’ the coffee.
If you were to cook your rice for 7 minutes instead of 8 minutes, it would make a huge difference. The same concept is true for coffee. To follow the recipe, you have to get your cook times down pat.
