Although the Hario looks like simplicity itself, the design hides some solid technology. The Skerton uses ceramic burrs to grind, with two distinct advantages. First, the burrs are designed to authentically grind rather than smash the beans, as blade grinders can tend to. This results in an even grind, meaning the coffee grounds are of a consistent size, which is essential if you are to achieve even extraction.

The use of ceramic guarantees no degradation or rust, meaning you can trust this grinder to last you a long time without mechanical failure. The Skerton is capable of achieving great quality grinds across the board, so it’s as good for espresso as it is for french press. The grind settings are mounted on the top side of the grinder, allowing you easy access.

The crank is designed to be solid so you can put as much force through it as you need, and the non-slip bottom is designed to keep the grinder locked in position on the work surface while you grind. The attached jar can hold 100g of freshly ground coffee, but for those who need more volume, a larger mason jar can be easily utilised to increase the capacity.

Hario Skerton Plus Ceramic Coffee Grinder - Very Nice

First time using a manual grinder to prepare my beans & I am very satisfied with the experience. Easy to setup, use & disassemble for cleaning. Grind adjustment works well with consistent results. AB came through in spades when there were problems with delivery via the courier. Thank you!

Good Starter Grinder

Overall good product, a little fiddly to adjust. But for my use it is a set and forget situation so not a huge deal. Also not a huge deal is the cap screw, the design doesn’t rely on it being tight, but it tends to loosen with use unless *really* tightened. Minor bit-picks.

Also great when used with a cordless drill or drill press - see below

While manual grinders work OK including this one which I've had and used daily for 2 years, they nearly all lack 2 things; 1. a really secure way to hold the grinder (with the left hand for RH people). 2. not ideal leverage and subsequent poor ergonomically. I just got sick of doing it manually and now use a drill press - but the same approach works with a cordless drill/driver. I replace the top screw with a split washer and a suitable nut, then got a 10mm hex head driver bit to suit the nut. Obsessives ex sailors like me choose stainless nut and washer. You can always take your grinder to Bunnings so you can be sure to get nut with a thread that suits. I can do 5 days grinding in a couple of minutes. The fact that you get a storage lid with the grinder is the clincher for me on this model.

Ease of use and highly practical

Fantastic! I bought this for my son who lives for his coffee. He says it’s easy to use and get the right consistency with. He’s also loving on the bonus fact that you can grind and store the ground beans in the generously sized jar, without needing to transfer them. Super happy!
