Every espresso machine, whether manual, automatic or semi-automatic, must have a portafilter. It is considered the most important part of the machine. However, a portafilter will not guarantee perfect results if one does not know how to use it.
Coffee beans or grounds must be prepared properly as well as tamping the ground coffee to achieve a perfectly made coffee. The portafilter is simply a part of the coffee machine that holds the coffee grounds during the brewing process. A working portafilter is, therefore, a must-have component in every coffee brewing process.
Espresso Machine Portafilter
The portafilter is comprised of few parts including a handle which allows easy handling of the unit by the brewer. A filter basket, usually made of metal and has several tiny perforations at the bottom that allow the water containing the extracted espresso to filter through.
The tension spring is another crucial part that holds the filter basket in place during the brewing process. The portafilter also has a spout which is a hole with a chute found at the bottom, through which the brewed espresso drains into a waiting coffee mug or cup below it.
The most important part of brewing a good coffee is knowing how to use your coffee portafilter and other barista tools correctly. If you're interested in making a great espresso for yourself, your guests, or for sale to customers at a café, there are a few basics you need to learn. These include two steps, one which is done before adding the ground coffee into the filter while the other is performed after adding the ground coffee.
The first step is learning how to grind the coffee beans to a correct consistency. It's a skill mastered through practice although it can be aided by the use of a suitable grinder. Ground coffee that is too rough or too fine results in an espresso that has not attained the correct exposure to the brewing process.
The second step is learning how to tamp/compress the ground coffee correctly using a coffee tamper in the portafilter. Tamping your coffee ground too tight or too loose gives a sub-optimal espresso.
Since there are different types of espresso machines, the kind of portafilter will differ based on the classification of a particular machine. We offer different types of portafilters sourced from a variety of recognized manufacturers around the world. These include pressurized, non-pressurized, bottomless or 'naked portafilters'.
Non-Pressurised Portafilters
Commonly used with many of today’s semi-automatic espresso machines. Most of the professional baristas love to use these.
Pressurised Portafilters
Common with today’s automatic espresso machines. This portafilter does the work of tamping for you unlike the non-pressurized, which you have to do the tamping yourself.
Naked Portafilters
For perfectionists trying to see whether the water is being pushed through the coffee in an even manner. Because naked portafilters don't have a spout it makes viewing this much easier and is a good way to refine your tamping skills.
Our Commercial Coffee Portafilter Range
We have a variety of portafilters from reputable manufacturers ensuring our customers are spoilt for choice. Some of the best brands available are Profitec, Unic, Nuova Simonelli, La Marzocco, Gaggia, Wega and Rancilio. The shapes and appearance of the portafilters from these different brands vary, with some having features that are unique from the others. Some have a single spout while others have two spouts, some are bottomless, and several boast other distinguishing features.
