The coffee filter basket is a small bowl like component which the grounds are placed in. It's made of metal and has tiny holes all over the bottom to allow for the espresso coffee into the spout. It's designed to allow the barista to tamp the grounds to allow for maximum extraction of the espresso.

The tension spring is another crucial component of the portafilter. It works by holding the filter basket in place inside the portafilter during the coffee making process. The tension spring is basically designed to eliminate any possibility of the filter basket turning from the inside.
