Here at Barista Warehouse, we’re in on a little secret that not many other people are aware of.
Actually, there are two:
- 1. Science will soon say that coffee is actually the beverage of the gods (It was/is Zeus’ drink of choice).
- 2. Coffee filters don’t get nearly as much respect or attention as they deserve!
Ever since these handy filtration devices were invented, they became absolutely inseparable from the brewing process. Despite this, many people look at them as an afterthought to the process and a part of the mess to clean up afterwards.
Here’s why we think that’s a mistake!
Why You Should Use Coffee Filters
Let’s start with what purpose a filter serves.
Coffee is produced by the running of water through ground beans, allowing that water to absorb the flavor and nutrients of the beans in the process.
However, the goal is to get a liquid by the end of it. Not a web blob or a stimulating but disgusting soup!
The primary function of the filter is to separate the grinds from the final product. However, filters also affect the taste and a good one will also allow for a better extraction of the coffee.
The Various Filter Types
Paper
Paper filters are the commonplace pieces you find at the office and in most people’s homes. They are widely spread for the fact that they are cheap, easily disposable, readily available and able to be used for both fine and coarse grinds.
The downside to using them is that throwing away all of these paper products is not very environmentally friendly. In addition, they can add a ‘papery’ taste to your sensitive coffee.
Gold Tone
These guys are much more expensive than paper filters
Why?
Some of them are 23 karat gold. Gold doesn’t interact with water in any way, making the resulting flavor of the coffee far superior.
Another benefit is their reusability. You can throw them in the dishwasher after use and they’ll be good to go another round, saving you money in the long run.
Permanent
These are like Gold Tone filters, only cheaper. And often made of steel (though some are gold plated).
Definitely reusable and washable in the same way as their more expensive counterparts. You just shouldn’t expect the flavor to match what you would brew with the Gold Tones.
Cloth
These guys are exactly what it says on the package: Filters made of cloth!
Finger grinds can pass through these and into the coffee, and they can be difficult to clean, but they are reusable and still make for better flavor than the paper ones.
These are the least often seen but might appeal most to people looking for a sort of rustic feel in their coffee making process.
